Terry Funk Exclusive “I have retired 22 times now”

Hardcore legend and wrestling veteran Terry Funk recently announced his return to the ring at the ripe age of 72. This will unlikely be a surprise to most fans as he has now retired 22 times and counting.

We spoke to the living legend about his health and fitness, including a nasty abdominal hernia. He also shared some heartwarming views on the industry as well as discussing his admiration for the modern WWE product. You can listen to the full interview below:

On his health:

I have had about 15 operations due to the wrestling profession, and I have a problem with an abdominal hernia. If anybody has ever had one knows damn sure what I am talking about.

Do I feel confident about my health? I don’t think that anybody ever should feel confident about their health if they are 72 years old, and getting ready to go in to the ring. If they are then they are probably some kind of an idiot and that is more than likely what I am.

On his motivation to get back in the ring.

It’s my life and I love it. It’s what I have done for my entire life, go to wrestling matches and watch my father entertain the people, then to continue to entertain them myself. I have watched my brother entertain the people. As far as my family goes we are very much circus people, it’s turning in to a generation thing. I wish that I had a boy that could continue on, but I don’t want my girls in the business.

When you love something do it. Life is a wonder thing when you enjoy it and the world of wrestling has been my world and what I have wanted to do since I was 4 years old.

On the modern WWE product.

I’m probably going to surprise you because I like the modern product. Do I wish it wasn’t what it is? Absolutely, I wish it were the same as it was but it can’t be. The reason why is because wrestling is about what turns the turnstile, its about people paying admission to the shows.

On a WWE return

I don’t have any desire; I am still involved in the business. Actually as I have got control of the profession, I am the one that is controlling my profession. My profession isn’t controlling me at this time and that is a very important factor to anybody in any business. This goes to all the individuals out there, be in control of your business don’t let your business take control of you.
